2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG at Frankfurt Motor Show

Mercedes’ last gasp in the supercar game was the SLR McLaren, which ended its run of wowing car-show patrons last year. Although it was a gorgeous car, it had been around for six years, and Mercedes wanted to break away from the McLaren partnership to build the $500,000 car. The all-new SLS AMG was designed completely in-house, and it features some retro aesthetics, namely gull-wing doors.

To get to those gull-wings, you first have to get past the front end with its flattened grille and gigantic Mercedes emblem. It’s easy to pick apart a grille these days — it’s the blank canvas that automakers feel free to deface. However, the SLS AMG’s profile and rear are much more minimal in design and would even be considered understated by some. The interior is supposed to evoke the feel of an aircraft cockpit, and the numerous buttons on the center console certainly help with that.

Performance isn’t neglected for style as the 6.3-liter V-8 is a terrific engine, and teaming it to a lightweight body — 3,571 pounds — leads to a zero-to-60 time of 3.6 seconds. Weight is distributed in a 47/53 front-to-rear ratio, and the transmission is a dual-clutch with seven speeds.

The big question is how many of the SLS AMGs — believed to be around $250,000 — will we ever see. The very limited SLR McLaren sold around 3,500 units in its lifetime, and it looks like the price of the SLS will put it in more rarified air than the likes of the Audi R8.

2011 Audi R8 Spyder at Frankfurt Motor Show

Lucky Frankfurt Motor Show attendees will be the first to see a convertible version of Audi's phenomenal R8, called the R8 Spyder. Foregoing the proliferating retractable hardtop, Audi has gone with a soft-top to keep weight in check and maximize cargo space (and really, when the engine's behind the seats, there's little choice). Due for production in the first quarter of 2010, the Spyder will come only with a 5.2-liter V-10 engine, which is a new option on the hardtop R8 for 2010.

Much of the added weight in convertible versions of coupes comes from structural reinforcements, but Audi claims the Spyder's aluminum space frame is only about 13 pounds heavier than the coupe's. The fully automatic top itself adds about 66 pounds, Audi says.

The Spyder lacks the coupe's characteristic side blades, however, the air intakes remain on the flanks behind the doors to cool the midmounted engine. Available photos only show the car with the top down, so we can't tell how it matches the coupe's silhouette. It definitely looks good, and it's unmistakably an R8 when viewed from the front and back.

The V-10 engine generates 525 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 390 pounds-feet of torque at 6,500 rpm, which is a bit high in the rev range. The range itself is high with a redline of 8,700 rpm — impressive, as it is in the coupe's V-8.

Quattro all-wheel drive is standard, with a rear torque bias for a rear-wheel-drive feel. Transmission choices include a six-speed manual with the gate shifter we loved or an R tronic dual-clutch six-speed automated manual with Drive and Sport modes as well as manual stick or paddle shifting. Audi says the manual R8 Spyder hits 62 mph in 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 194.5 mph. Its combined city/highway gas mileage is estimated at 15.8 mpg. The automatic improves it to 16.9 mpg.

An electromagnetic adaptive suspension is standard, but a sport suspension option reverts to conventional sport-tuned shock absorbers. The brakes comprise eight-piston calipers in front and four-pistons in the rear.

Naturally, leather upholstery is standard, as are heated seats and a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo. Navigation and Audi's Multi-Media Interface controller are standard, but you'll pay extra for a backup camera. One nifty innovation: Optional microphones in the shoulder belts are close enough to the driver's and passenger's mouths for hands-free cellular communication with the top down.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes and combination thorax/head side-impact airbags. There's an electronic stability system with regular and Sport modes, plus full defeat.

Audi will only say that the Spyder will arrive here sometime after its European rollout and will be a 2011 model.

Ferrari 458 Italia at Frankfurt Motor Show

Looks like: Ferrari is actually getting adventurous with its design
Drivetrain: 562-hp, 4.5-liter V-8 engine with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission

Ferrari has been on an unusual tear of releasing new models. Last year, we were treated to the California convertible, and now we get the 458 Italia. This new mid-engine two-seater is radical looking no matter which angle you view it from. From the front, the trailing headlight LEDs and strange eyelit vents are completely original and quite outrageous. While they’re unique looking, they still speak to the Ferrari faithful.

Far more provocative, however, is the rear and its voluptuous fender. The profile — it’s hard to find a good profile image from the manufacturer — is probably the shot that’s most distressing to Ferrari fans because the back half looks enormous compared to the car’s hood. From straight on, the back’s protruding taillights and trio of exhaust pipes are also slightly bizarre.

Pentastar wheels are the only traditional touch we can see.

Of course, it’s still a Ferrari and that means it can perform as well as strain gawkers’ necks. The V-8 engine is good for 562 horsepower and a zero-to-62 time of 3.4 seconds, which is about as fast as anyone can expect to go in a car today that doesn’t shoot flames out the back. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is controlled only by paddle shifters on the Formula One race-inspired steering wheel, and dual electronic gauges frame a center tachometer, which says this is a serious performance machine.

Because the engine sits behind the seats weight is balanced 42/58 front to rear, which should make for fun days on the track. More photos below.

Mini Roadster Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show

Looks like: A sportier Mini convertible

BMW has already confirmed that this Roadster concept and the Mini Coupe concept we showed you a few weeks ago will go into production in the near future. We’ll guess that the finished products won’t look radically different from the concepts that are sitting underneath the auto show’s lights.

You might be asking — like we are — why on earth does Mini need slightly smaller versions of the current Coopers we all know and love. The answer is not an easy one, but we’d guess these two cars are meant for driving enthusiasts who already covet the Mini’s handling and performance characteristics. These two shorter, lighter cars should be thrilling to drive.

Both will likely be powered by only the top engine in the Mini lineup, a turbocharged four-cylinder that’s good for 172 horsepower. Mini’s press release says 175 hp, so we’re not sure if the engines will get a minimal increase across the line or if it’ll strictly be for the new models.

Regardless, Mini fans will be ecstatic to have more cars to choose from. However, most car shoppers are more likely to consider the long-awaited Mini crossover. More photos of the Roadster concept are below.

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon

While most of the cars we’re hearing about in Frankfurt are of the fanciful supercar variety, Mercedes-Benz unveiled its most utilitarian of non-SUV models, the new E-Class wagon. The sedan and coupe versions of the E-Class were redesigned this year and are on sale now, but the new wagon won’t make it stateside until later next year as a 2011 model.

Because the new E-Class design — and Mercedes’ design overall — has a lot more hard lines and creases than the competition, the wagon’s wedge shape seems an easy transition for the designers. The profile is handsome and the front looks menacing; only the rear seems to be somewhat staid. It’s a wagon — what are you expecting?

Cargo volume is listed as 68 cubic feet, which would make it larger than the Audi A6 Avant (63.8 cubic feet) and the BMW 535i xDrive Sports Wagon (58.3 cubic feet).

The E-Class will go on sale in only one trim level to start, the E350 4matic, which has a 268-horsepower V-6 and Mercedes’ new seven-speed automatic. It will also have a self-leveling suspension for the rear to adjust for heavy loads.

Pricing won’t be announced until closer to the on-sale date, but the 2010 E350 4matic sedan is $2,000 less than the 2009 it replaced. The 2009 E350 4matic wagon starts at $57,250. The 2011 will also come with high-tech options like a collision warning system and Attention Assist, which alerts you when you’re drowsy. More photos below.

Rolls-Royce Ghost at the Frankfurt Motor Show

Those who follow the ultra-luxury segment — both fanboys and the people who can actually afford these things — will recall Rolls-Royce’s 200EX concept, which was unveiled at last spring’s Geneva Motor Show. The Ghost is the production version, and it looks much like the 200EX. A smaller, less expensive sibling to the RR’s flagship Phantom, the Ghost should appeal to “customers who have never had a Rolls-Royce before,” Rolls-Royce CEO Tom Purves told Bloomberg News at this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Of course, less expensive is a relative term. With a reported starting price around $338,000, it’s a wee bit pricier — a mere $160,000 — than Bentley’s least expensive sedan, the Continental Flying Spur. But the Rolls is no Continental lookalike. It looks more like cars of the steel-girded, half-a-million-greenbacks ilk, complete with an imposing upright grille, suicide rear doors and a power-retracting Spirit of Ecstasy statuette.

The Ghost is smaller, to be sure — some 16 inches shorter than a Phantom sedan — but it should prove to be a sizable presence in any driveway. At 5,445 pounds, it packs nearly 1,000 pounds of additional heft versus a Mercedes S600. That won’t weigh it down, though. Thanks to a 563-horsepower, twin-turbo V-12 and an eight-speed automatic, Rolls-Royce says the Ghost scoots to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds.

Inside, the five-seat cabin has a number of influences from Rolls-Royce owner BMW. There’s an iDrive-like controller for the center-dash display, though thankfully, it appears to have the functionality and shortcut keys from the Bavarian’s latest-generation iDrive, which beats iDrive 1.0 like “Top Chef” beats “Iron Chef.” (Oh boy, here come the emails.) As you might expect, wood and leather abound, with cowhides cut from bulls that roamed in barbed-wire-free fields. There are plenty of technological amenities, too: Front, side and rear cameras provide fish-eye views around the entire car, active cruise control can bring the Ghost to a full stop in traffic and rear passengers can enjoy their own multimedia system displays.

There’s no word on when the Ghost will materialize at U.S. dealerships — a Rolls-Royce representative has yet to return our calls — but we’d expect it to arrive sometime early next year. Stay tuned for more details, and check out the photos below.

2010 Kia Sorento Shown in Frankfurt, Including Diesel Hybrid

While some early reviews of the 2010 Sorento have hit the web — check out Motor Trend’s thorough testing of a European model — Kia isn’t offering up much information about the U.S. version. However, we do have some images of the new SUV, which will seat seven with an optional third row, and come in four-cylinder and V-6 varieties.

The hybrid diesel concept, which was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show, is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel teamed with an electric motor and dual clutch transmission. Lithium-ion batteries are also part of the powerplant. Overall, the hybrid is 8% lighter than a standard Sorento, and there are aerodynamic under-floor panels to help with efficiency.

There’s little chance the diesel hybrid will hit the U.S., but it’s part of a new EcoDynamics range of hybrids, which will likely produce a typical hybrid version of the crossover at some point. Perhaps we’ll hear more at the Los Angeles auto show in December.

Auto manufacturer Honda Siel Cars on Tuesday launched a refurbished Honda Civic sedan with alternations in its design, such as a five-point metallic front grille and a new bumper.The new Civic is available in three variants that will come in two models - Elegance and Inspire. 1.Best Entry Level Petrol/ Diesel Sedan

Maruti Suzuki Swift D'zire Vxi/VDi

The D'zire was supposed to be the successor to Maruti's long running and successful Esteem so it had a lot resting on its strong waistline. Based on the highly successful Swift, the D'zire was an immediate success. People immediately took a liking to its bold lines even though the addition of the boot looked slightly awkward. The interiors though not the most spacious of the lot is pretty well built and equipped. In fact its one of the few cars in its segment which features climate control and steering mounted audio controls. The seats are extremely comfortable and offer support in all the right areas making long drives a breeze. The diesel unit produces 75 PS and has bags of torque offering excellent drivability. Around town the car requires very few gear changes with the torque pushing the car in any gear. On twisty roads the true character of the D'zire comes to the fore. The car is an absolute joy to throw around corners and is definitely one of the best handling cars in the bunch. Ride quality though slightly on the stiffer side is pretty composed and handles most ruts and speed breakers with aplomb. With funky looks, peppy performance and extremely frugal figures the D'zire is definitely the pick of the lot.

Ford Fiesta TDCI

The Ikon 1.6 was the original 'Josh Machine' from Ford. After the end of its production, Ford introduced the all new Fiesta. Design wise although not as funky as the competition, the Fiesta sported clean lines which were pleasing to the eye. Step on the inside and one is welcomed by one of the sportiest interiors in its class. Even the driver's seat offers a sporty driving position with everything falling at hand with ease. Under the hood, the Fiesta houses a 1.4 litre TDCi engine which is extremely refined. While it may not offer the outright performance of some of its rivals, in gear acceleration is definitely right up there with the best. This makes it extremely drivable. It is also one of the most frugal engines of the lot. Fords have always been known to be great handlers and the Fiesta is no exception. Honda City

1998 was when Honda made inroads into India with the City. Ever since, it's been the top seller in its segment. The most important factor for its success was the engine. Although the engines have evolved over the years, they retained more than one commonality, refinement and cubic capacity. From the brilliant hyper 16 valve unit to the current i-VTEC unit, the engines have always been the USP of Honda cars. But the current generation City is definitely more than just about its engine. Performance as expected is scintillating, but what is also the talking point is that the City is also the most fuel efficient car in its class. The current City is also a good handler compared to its predecessors making it a good choice for the performance oriented lot.

4. Best Entry Level Hatch

Tata Nano

This may well be the hottest volume-churning segment in the country right now, and for good reason. The need for safe and sheltered personal mobility is rising, but spenders are still keeping their purse strings tight - and this segment works perfectly in their favour. Most of the cars here are rehashed versions of old international cars, but that doesn't take anything away from their usability and practicality, be it small towns or bustling metros.

5.Best Mid-Level Hatch

Maruti Suzuki A-Star

The A-Star faces some stiff competition from the Hyundai i10, which in fact is selling better numbers than the A-Star right now. The latest-gen Suzuki Alto however had to be our pick for its feisty manners combined with its easy-sipping fuel efficiency.Conceptualised and styled by Maruti's designers in India, the Suzuki A-Star may be the next Alto for the rest of the world, but in India it is the spiritual successor to the Zen - small, light, peppy and extremely good looking! While the Ritz' design may be a matter of personal opinion the contemporary shape grows on you the more you look at it - especially at the rear. The Ritz pips none other than its mighty sibling the Swift from the top spot owing to plusher and younger interiors, but the real reason why this car is doing so well is because of its engine options.

Armed with either the now-legendary 1.3 DDiS diesel or the lean-mean K12M 1.2 litre petrol mill, the Ritz is a great package overall. Adding to the Ritz' appeal is its great suspension setup that not only irons out bumps but supports great handling as well when pushed hard. Great fuel efficiency and competitive pricing further settles the argument.

7.Best Premium Hatch

Honda Jazz.

Premium hatches are somewhat new to our country, and slowly but surely buyers are ditching their big-car complexes for these spacious, modern and practical cars. Apart from Chevrolet SRV which can be called the first premium hatch in India, the Skoda Fabia set the scene with its launch. Then came the Hyundai i20 to warm the segment up and banking on the heat and pick of the segment- the Honda Jazz.

8.Best Entry Level SUV(Sport Utility vehicle)

Mahindra Scorpio

Maserati & Ferrari Cars to hit Indian Roads Soon

The Italian auto giant Fiat and Tata Motors are in talk for a joint marketing project, to sell Ferrari and Maserati cars in India. In addition to this, they are working on further co-operation to add to the existing projects such as partnership to manufacture engines in India.

Ferrari Cars IndiaMr. Tata, who is also the Fiat director, told Italian Daily, La Stampa, "We have various projects, to take the Nano to Latin America together, to share platforms for new cars, we have projects for (Fiat lorry unit) Iveco and marketing Ferraris and Maseratis. We are talking about a lot of things."

Ferrari and Maserati are both renowned brands that are in Fiat's control. Tata Motors forayed in the luxury car business after acquiring the British brands Jaguar and Land Rover for $2.3 billion from the US automaker Ford last year.

Encouraged by the great response received for the petrol version of i10, Hyundai is moving a step ahead with the launch of a diesel variant Hyundai i10; reported CNBC-TV 18. Hyundai i10 diesel will be fitted with a 1.1 L CRDi engine which is likely to offer improved fuel efficiency and improved drivability due to the engine's higher torque output as compared to the petrol version.

In a bid to expand the existing portfolio it is looking at launching new products. It was earlier reported that Hyundai Motor India Ltd would set up its existing car manufacturing plant at Sriperumbudur near Chennai in Tamil Nadu.

'Live Mint' newspaper, quoted an anonymous source and claimed that the Indian arm of the Korean automaker is likely to invest at least Rs. 500 crore to construct a factory that would have an installed capacity to manufacture around 100,000 engines. This complied with India's second largest passenger carmaker's aim to manufacture diesel variants of its existing models like Hyundai i10 and Hyundai i20 in the country and save the car's cost by around 15-20%.

At present, the Indian arm of the Korean automaker has a petrol engine plant which makes Kappa and Gamma engine strapped onto models like the Hyundai i10 city (Kappa version) car and Hyundai i20 super-hatch. The engine was developed at a cost of over US$ 400 million.

Bajaj Bike: Plans to Launch New Motorcycles in 4 Months

Bajaj Auto is panning to introduce its second new bike for the year in November. The new motorcycle will be in competition with the Hero Honda Splendor and Hero Honda Passion bikes, which rule the roost.

Rajiv Bajaj, MD said it will create a new category or segment in the motorcycle market. According to the analysts it would be in the 100-125cc segment. The new Bajaj Discover 100cc with a DTSi engine is the world's most fuel-efficient motorcycle, with a certified 89 km to a litre of petrol is billed by Bajaj. It was a breakthrough in the segment.

Bajaj Auto's current market share in the 100cc segment stands at 9 per cent, while that of Hero Honda's is pegged at around 80 per cent. Bajaj currently leads the market with the share of 21 per cent in the total motorcycle segment.

Bajaj says, "We hope to hope to regain our former market share of 36 per cent by all that we are doing. The sooner we gain the better."

The 100cc segment contributes to one-third of the total motorcycle market in India. Big companies like Hero Honda, TVS Motor and Yamaha dominates the 100cc motorcycle segment. There are two categories in the segment the entry-level motorcycles brought up by models like Hero Honda Dawn and CD Deluxe the premium end constituting the Hero Honda Passion and Splendor.

The ratio between entry and premium 100cc motorcycles is in the ratio of 30:70, says Pradeep Saxena, senior vice president (automotive practice) of TNS Global. Contradicting the popular perception, rural buyers also opt for the premium 100cc models and not only urban consumers buy the premium 100cc motorcycles.

"It's difficult to pinpoint geographical discriminators for the 100cc segment. It has got to do with income levels. Prosperous rural buyers are buying premium 100cc motorcycles. Over the last two years, we've witnessed equal rate of growths in both categories of the 100cc motorcycle segment."

Bajaj Auto's second segmentation in the 100cc segment lies in disruptive marketing. By introducing the new Discover 100cc, which is derived from the Bajaj Discover 125cc & Bajaj Discover 135cc lineage, consumers would perceive the 100cc as a 125 cc, says Bajaj.

"Those who till now could not afford the 125cc motorcycle can now buy the vehicle at the cost of a 100cc bike."

"The new Discover 100cc offers long-distance commuters enhanced comfort by offering features like gas filled Nitrox rear shock absorbers and anti-friction front forks." Enhancing more features in a 100cc motorcycle can help in third differentiation.

Hero Honda has a total of seven models in 100cc segment some are CD Dawn, CD Deluxe, Splendor, and Passion and remaining three are variants. Bajaj Auto has the Bajaj Platina and the Discover in the 100cc segment but there are no variants currently.

Next Honda too is panning to enter into the 100cc segment. Shinji Aoyoma, president & CEO of Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India Ltd said that, "Our 100cc motorcycle will be positioned as a sporty performance motorcycle".

TVS India in order to compete and make its position in the scooter segment is all set to launch a 100cc scooter from its Hosur facility near Bangalore, though the timeline has not been fixed.

Sources claim that TVS Bikes is reportedly considering a gearless scooter and will co-exist with the other two scooters - TVS Scooty Pep and TVS Scooty Streak which have engine displacement below 100cc at the moment.
